Independent business advisory
We look at the business you know inside and out, from the outside looking in.
Helping owner-managed businesses identify opportunities, strengthen performance and build long-term value through independent reviews and practical advisory support.
Clarity about what matters most.
The problem
Every business develops blind spots.
Owners do not lack experience. Familiarity makes objective assessment increasingly difficult. Processes are accepted because they have always existed. Costs are accepted because they have always been paid. The website stays as it is because there has never been time to revisit it.
An independent perspective changes that. It is difficult to see a business clearly from inside it, and that is not a failing. It is what happens when you build something over years.
How we help
Independent assessment, and the work that follows from it
Some questions are best answered by a structured review. Others need something built, developed or planned. You are welcome to approach us about whichever is most relevant to your circumstances; there is no required starting point.

Our methodology
The Aston Finch Value Framework™
Every Aston Finch review considers your business through these four interconnected areas. Improvements in one often strengthen another. Our role is to identify where those opportunities exist and help prioritise what matters most.
Four interconnected areas, working towards one outcome: long-term business value.
- Strategic readiness
- Whether the business is structurally prepared for whatever comes next.
- Commercial performance
- How effectively the business attracts, converts and keeps customers.
- Digital presence
- Whether the business online reflects the business in reality.
- Financial performance
- Whether financial information is supporting stronger commercial decisions.
Our approach
What an engagement involves
Most advisers begin with a solution. We begin with a diagnosis, because the greatest value lies not in identifying ten opportunities but in identifying the three that will make the greatest difference.
Independent assessment
We look at the business from outside it, with no transaction to earn from and nothing to place. Everything else rests on that.
Structured review
Every engagement applies the same framework, so the work is consistent whichever part of the business it examines.
Commercial judgement
We read a business for performance rather than compliance. The question throughout is what would make it stronger, not how it compares with a checklist.
Prioritised findings
Findings are ordered by what would make the greatest difference, with a horizon attached to each. Clarity matters more than completeness.
Practical recommendations
A recommendation that cannot realistically be implemented has no value, so everything we suggest is meant to be acted on.
Long-term perspective
We look past the current year. Improvements that still matter in three years are worth more than those that flatter the next quarter.
Afterwards
Support where it adds value.
Many clients act on what a review finds themselves. Others would rather have help with particular pieces of work. Where that is wanted, it is scoped separately and described within the relevant engagement rather than sold as a service of its own.
It is optional, and never the reason a recommendation was made.
Why Aston Finch
The experience behind the work
Aston Finch brings together commercial and financial experience, supported by practical digital work. That combination is why these engagements sit together as one practice rather than as separate offerings.
Two disciplines, one view
Commercial and financial experience applied together, because a commercial problem is often a financial one seen from another angle.
Commercial leadership
More than a decade in commercial sales leadership: how work is genuinely won, and where commercial processes lose revenue nobody records.
Chartered accountancy experience
More than a decade developed at PwC, including managerial responsibility, applied to what the numbers reveal rather than to compliance.
Practical digital experience
Direct experience of website design and digital presentation, so a digital review is grounded in what can realistically be changed.
Confidentiality
Owners share sensitive information, often before anyone else has been told. Protecting that is fundamental to the work.
No commissions, no success fees
We are paid for the review and nothing that follows it, so no commercial reason exists to recommend anything other than what we believe.

Why most small businesses are worth less than their owners think
Owners and buyers are answering different questions, which is why the two figures rarely meet. Where value quietly leaks, and why the gap is usually discovered too late to close.

The five risks that reduce business value before you ever sell
Value reflects risk as much as profit. Dependency, concentration, undocumented knowledge, unconvincing numbers and informal contracts: how each is priced, and which to address first.

Preparing for exit starts years before you sell
